Statement on Bell Pottinger

The Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) has issued the following statement in response to the growing interest into the activities of Bell Pottinger.

Why has the CIPR remained silent on this issue?
The CIPR cannot confirm or deny the existence of a complaint and would normally only comment on any disciplinary matter after a final adjudication has been made.

The CIPR’s role as a regulator is defined in our Royal Charter. We operate a complaints procedure in such a way that the public, and our members, can be confident that complaints brought to the CIPR will be handled fairly and appropriately. Maintaining confidentiality ensures our processes can be fair, equal and rigorous.

Is Bell Pottinger a Corporate Affiliate member of the CIPR?
No. Bell Pottinger is not and has never been a member of the CIPR.

Are any Bell Pottinger employees members of the CIPR?
Yes. Three Bell Pottinger employees are CIPR members. Members are responsible for their conduct, as well as the conduct of those for whom they are directly responsible.

Do any Bell Pottinger employees sit on CIPR Board or Council?
No.

About the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR)Founded in 1948, the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) is the Royal Chartered professional body for public relations practitioners in the UK and overseas. The CIPR is the largest membership organisation for PR practitioners outside of North America. By size of turnover and number of individually registered members, we are the leading representative body for the PR profession and industry in Europe.

The CIPR advances professionalism in public relations by making its members accountable to their employers and the public through a code of conduct and searchable public register, setting standards through training, qualifications, awards and the production of best practice and skills guidance, facilitating Continuing Professional Development (CPD), and awarding Chartered Public Relations Practitioner status (Chart.PR).
