They set out the handbook's five-stage crisis cycle of predict, protect, prepare, respond and recover, and make the case for investing in preparedness before a crisis hits through scenario planning and horizon scanning. The discussion also covers how public inquiries and the duty of candour can give a crisis a long tail after organisations believe it is over.

For PR professionals, the episode makes the case for framing advice in terms of consequences, business outcomes and organisational resilience, and for learning the language of the boardroom. It argues that crisis response cannot save bad decision-making, and that communicators add most value when boards bring them in to the spaces decisions are made.

Listen to the episode on Apple and Spotify

Download the handbook, ‘Crisis Communications for Boards’

Learn more about the CIPR Crisis Communications Network

<pp:quotes><pp:quote>

Anyone who has worked in communications will recognise that problem. What I really enjoyed about this conversation was the honesty from Katherine, Jon and Kerry about what boards need from communications, and what communicators can bring to the boardroom. Boards make decisions about strategy, risk, reputation, culture and organisational priorities. So many of those decisions are ultimately about trust, relationships, perceptions and communities. Communications can play a really effective part of good governance. It’s a really useful episode for anyone working in communications, but also for trustees and anyone who sits on a board, or hopes to. My thanks to Katherine, Jon and Kerry for giving us their time and sharing their expertise so generously.</pp:quotetext>

It advises boards on how to predict, protect, prepare, respond, recover, and build enduring resilience.

The handbook is supported by a practical toolkit and in-depth recommendations for wider reading and practical resources. It also identifies case studies from leading academics and practitioners, examining recent and high-profile crises and the lessons they offer for boards looking to strengthen their preparedness, upskill their personnel, and scrutinise existing plans.

Emphasising how, in a crisis, ultimately the buck stops with the board, the handbook also examines how the modern reputation management landscape is evolving, and with it the crisis risks which boards face. These range from an increasingly turbulent geopolitical context to the growing challenges and opportunities presented by AI usage: a detailed section examines the emerging governance risks of AI and how, as its capabilities expand, so too do the associated ethical, legal, operational, and reputational risks.

The handbook also sets out to address a persistent gap: while reputation is increasingly becoming a standalone discussion point on board agendas, very few boards in fact include communications professionals or understand fully the role they can play.

Download the best practice guide “Crisis Communications for Boards: A Handbook for Good Governance”

Log 10 CPD points for reading the guide

<pp:quotes><pp:quote>

They can see how disparate threats, from well-publicised supply chain shocks to subtle employee disengagement, can all coalesce into serious damage to an organisation.
