It finds female practitioners who succeed in senior roles do so despite these barriers, developing "creative workarounds" to sustain careers within public relations practice.

Sponsored by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) Research Fund, The Missing Women Study builds on the CIPR's 2024 PR Population report findings. It reported that women make up two-thirds of practitioners working in public relations below director level but under half of those working in senior roles. This new report combines a literature review, survey data from more than 230 respondents, and interviews with 30 women to pinpoint interconnected cultural, structural, and societal barriers that impede women's progress in the profession. The research identified:

Systemic Barriers: A "boys' club" mentality, devaluation of public relations work, limited development pathways, and societal caregiving expectations as key factors driving women out of the profession. Over half of survey respondents felt they did not have equal opportunities for advancement compared to male colleagues.

Work-Life Challenges: The unsustainable, "always on" culture and lack of flexible working arrangements disproportionately affect women with caring responsibilities. Burnout was highlighted as the biggest career challenge, identified by over half of survey respondents.

Strategic Career Choices: Women who succeed often employ "workarounds" by strategically managing their careers, choosing progressive employers, and investing in professional growth. However, these strategies often require significant compromises between career advancement and worklife balance.

A Rewarding Career: Despite these challenges, the majority of women surveyed see public relations as a rewarding career. Over 9 in 10 rate their job satisfaction as very good, good, or average.

The research emphasises that successful women are thriving despite systemic barriers, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive change. Recommendations include the introduction of leadership development and progression programs and flexible working arrangements without career penalties.

The study was delivered by a team of Socially Mobile graduates, Rana Audah, Isobel Wilson-Cleary and Josie Shepherd, led by Stephen Waddington. Whether the core issue to consider is pricing, access to energy, environmental, corporate or (geo)political; one always has to consider the wider dynamic and how one issue will effect the other.

This is one of many reasons we believe communications across the energy value chain to be part of the strategic management function; the constant interaction of issues and communities creates multiple simultaneous risks and opportunities - some of which will be existential. The effective management of these interconnected issues demands specialist understanding and constant learning, whether you're just starting out on your career or you're a Director of Communications.</pp:quotetext>

<pp:quotetext>The energy sector is at a significant crossroad – the demand for cleaner, cheaper energy is considered a given in the developed economies while in the less fortunate regions of the world a lightbulb is considered a luxury. The clothes we wear, the food we eat, the water we consume and the transport we use are all possible because of energy: nuclear, wind, solar, oil, electricity and gas. While there are many commonalities among the energy types and consumption patterns across the world, there are very few common elements in how the consumers, governments and energy companies communicate and engage with one another.

“It’s great to see some brands, such as John Lewis, Amazon, Sainsbury's and Curry's PC World taking a more inclusive stance this year, with diverse casting and story lines, that make a noticeably different connection with the audience. These brands have shown they understand the diversity of their audience.
“But, sadly the vast majority of Christmas brand campaigns completely overlook diversity and inclusion and remain all 'white', leaving their non-white audience ‘out in the cold’.

“The recently-launched #ChristmasSoWhite campaign is a timely and important reminder about the critical lack of diverse and inclusive images in marketing and advertising campaigns.
This is the fourth year that CIPR Inside will be celebrating the best of internal communication with the #insidestory awards.

Each year the group of internal communicators on the committee review the programme, and adapt it to make sure it delivers what the changing world of internal communication needs.

This year the main category of employee engagement will be split to level the playing field, giving smaller organisations a chance to shine, and the best internal magazine category has also been divided by budget to better represent the work internal communication does, often delivered with minimal expenditure. A new category ‘Most innovative approach to an internal communications challenge’ has also been added to capture examples of breaking the mould or taking bold steps with internal communication.

The awards categories are:

1. Best example of employee engagement

1. SME (up to 1000 people)
2. Small (1-5k people)
Articulating and enforcing professional standards is the way to ensure the future of public relations in any context. It must mean a continual focus on skills and professional development, accountability for professional conduct and a meaningful connection with the wider public interest.
