<pp:quotetext>Amidst the rapid evolution of the PR industry, we must refuse to normalise stress as an inherent part of our culture. The past five years have brought significant change, with more on the horizon. As we navigate the shift to hybrid work environments, it's urgent to grasp the implications for our workflows and communication dynamics. A constant barrage of updates can hinder focus, and an 'always-on' mentality isn't sustainable. It's time for leaders to amplify the conversation on mental health. While progress has been made in acknowledging and addressing mental health challenges, lip service alone won't suffice. We must ensure our actions match our words. By prioritising wellbeing, we pave the way for a healthier, more resilient workforce, benefiting both our businesses and our people.</pp:quotetext>

This is the second year of our working together and I hope that by encouraging discussions amongst colleagues and peers we can see the dial shift and greater proactive approaches taken by business leaders to address the wellbeing concerns of their teams. For two years we have talked about the success and growth of the PR industry but, as previous research has indicated, this hasn't been matched with any improvements to our collective wellbeing. Seismic events dominating the news agenda together with the increased workload due to the industry's struggle to recruit is a dangerous recipe and means those in our industry must work harder than ever before. Creating a culture of support is a first step and one I hope the industry grasps with both hands and takes forward.</pp:quotetext>

But the simple truth is far too many of our colleagues work in organisations and cultures that fail to prioritise employee wellbeing. Our previous research has highlighted the severity of this issue – we now need leaders to act and implement policies and procedures that protect mental health.“Today, we have two simple asks. Complete our survey to help us benchmark the industry’s progress on this vital issue. And register to take part in our Heard Mentality campaign to initiate internal conversations on mental health and wellbeing. Together, we can defeat the stigma attached to mental health and create healthy working environments for all our people.</pp:quotetext>

<pp:quotetext>This research does more than shine a light on a well-known problem. It is a call to action; the power to improve the mental health of our employees and colleagues is in our hands and action is expected. If our model of work isn’t working for the majority, how do we fix it? Normalise conversations around mental health. Allow people time off for stress and mental health concerns. And actively manage your team's workload and your stakeholder’s expectations.

The pressures of working in public relations are very real and it’s right that we should be concerned but we should also be hopeful. There has been a noticeable shift towards more open and supportive cultures, with more than half of those who experienced mental health concerns talking about them to someone else at work. That must continue and the industry must embrace the new world of hybrid working as an opportunity to deliver a better balance between work and life. <pp:quotetext>This report delivers data on where we are, and recommendations on what we should do. Some of its findings -such as nine out of ten practitioners have suffered mental ill health over the past year- are shocking. Others -such as three out of four have found their workplace to be supportive- are very welcome.

The four recommendations are simple, sensible, and sound. You shouldn’t feel guilty because you’re feeling unwell. You definitely should talk about the issue. We need to take better care of ourselves, and for many, that’s about workload. And where hybrid working works well, keep on with it.

The CIPR has launched a campaign to encourage PR professionals to switch off and focus on their mental wellbeing.

The call to action features prominently in the latest edition of Influence Magazine, which includes three articles on the importance of mental health.

The campaign calls on PR professionals to take a 10 minute break to focus solely on their wellbeing. It forms part of a broader set of CIPR initiatives planned for Mental Health Awareness Week.

Alongside the campaign, the CIPR has published a breathing exercise video and will host a tweet chat on mental health in PR on Wednesday 15 May at 12:30pm.

Let us know how you're taking time out using #InfluenceTakes10

Find out more about the #CIPRchat on mental health

Watch our breathing exercise video

Find out more about the CIPR's work on mental health

Working from home means lunch outside and 10 minutes reading the latest @InfluencePRMag
Or maybe I’ll just use my 10 minutes to listen to the birds singing instead. #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek #InfluenceTakes10 pic.twitter.com/ybjCnU1qv4
— Josephine Graham (@iojosy) May 13, 2019

Sunday morning, cup of tea, #peggythepoodle, the birds tweeting, fresh air and my new edition of @InfluencePRMag #influencetakes10 pic.twitter.com/bxq6ayFGtA
— Aimee Haggas (@aimeetweeting) May 12, 2019

One of the best bits of advice in this issue of @InfluencePRMag for #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek. That stranger was Neil Laybourn and together they have played a leading role in the world of wellbeing for the last four years.

Joining forces with Zoe Sinclair of Employees Matter, an employee engagement specialist, this team has created a pioneering event to tackle mental health issues in the workplace called This Can Happen (TCH). : a conference aiming to bring workable strategies and solutions to businesses for tackling mental health throughout their organisation – from the post-room to the boardroom.

Jonny and Neil visit companies across the world to talk about mental health issues, how to spot the signs and how to help. In aid of a mental health charity Heads Together, the pair ran the London Marathon raising almost £50,000. The story of their journey has also been made into an award-winning TV documentary, The Stranger on the Bridge, which aired on Channel 4 in 2015.

This Can Happen’s agenda is brimming with unique and fascinating content, and sessions will be hosted by international thought leaders. As a solutions-led conference, every speaker will give delegates actionable ideas to take back to work and implement strategically.

Speakers, facilitators and panellists include:

Tina Daheley, Journalist and Presenter at the BBC

Dr. Ellie Canon, Author and Broadcaster

That was the message conveyed during last night's event on mental health, hosted by iprovision and the CIPR's Diversity and Inclusion Forum.

Keynote speakers Colin Minto, Founding Partner of APeopleBusiness and Alison Kerry, Head of Media, Mind, delivered upbeat appraisals of mental health to an audience of forty public relations practitioners at the CIPR's London office.

Drawing on more than twenty years of senior HR experience at G4S, Colin Minto warned that media organisations had a duty to be mindful of the language they use when referencing mental health in reports. "Negative language stops people talking about mental health. Casual links between terrorism and mental health for example, are unhelpful," said Colin.

Colin, who also founded Mental Health in Business, explained that 'mental difference' is an opportunity and should be embraced by businesses. "Those living with mental health issues can bring a new and alternative approach to problem solving," he added.

Alison spoke of unprecedented societal interest in mental health and shared practical tips on managing employees with mental health issues."Be human, be supportive, arrange regular catch-ups and be flexible. Allowing employees to avoid commuting during rush hours can have a big impact."

The CIPR is the largest membership organisation for PR practitioners outside of North America. By size of turnover and number of individually registered members, we are the leading representative body for the PR profession and industry in Europe.

The CIPR advances professionalism in public relations by making its members accountable to their employers and the public through a code of conduct and searchable public register, setting standards through training, qualifications, awards and the production of best practice and skills guidance, facilitating Continuing Professional Development (CPD), and awarding Chartered Public Relations Practitioner status (Chart.PR).

About the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR)Founded in 1948, the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) is the Royal Chartered professional body for public relations practitioners in the UK and overseas.

</pp:boilerplate>

The Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) will address the mental health challenges facing PR, through a series of events aimed at raising awareness of key issues and showcasing best practice for employers.

For the last two years stress has been a major factor in the CIPR State of the Profession research. This year found almost a third (30%) of respondents describing themselves as either unhappy or extremely unhappy. In the context of 2014/15 findings, more than half (51%) of managers were ‘extremely stressed’ or ‘very stressed’ in their roles, evidencing the need for public relations to face up to the issue.

On Wednesday 18 May, the CIPR's Diversity and Inclusion Forum will host a free-to-attend Equal Access Network event focussing on workplace mental health initiatives, in support of Mental Health Awareness Week. Booking and further information is available via Eventbrite.
