I’d also like to thank David for such a collegiate campaign. Elections aren’t always comfortable for either candidate, but we’ve supported each other throughout and never lost sight of the fact that we’re both volunteers who care deeply about the CIPR and our professional community.I’ve been a proud CIPR member and volunteer for more than 15 years and I’ve seen first-hand what we can achieve when we come together. I’m really excited to work with Dan during his Presidential year and with members, volunteers and staff across the Institute, building on the work already underway and the conversations I’ve had with people throughout the campaign. I want the CIPR to meet members where they are, now and in the future, and to be a professional home where people feel they belong. As Chief Volunteer, the President is there to represent our members and make sure their voices are heard. I said throughout the campaign that my approach would be ‘a little less me and a lot more we’. That’s the spirit I’ll bring to the role, and I can’t wait to get started.</pp:quotetext>

The Council, the Board, and the Presidency are where the character of the Institute is set, and where the future direction of PR in the UK is debated, tested, and decided. The people who step forward carry that responsibility on behalf of everyone else in the profession. In return, they gain broad networks across sectors they may not otherwise encounter, have a direct hand in the decisions affecting working practitioners, and build a depth of understanding of the industry that few other roles in PR can offer. <pp:quotetext>On Monday afternoon the CIPR Council took steps to call a fresh election for the position of 2013 President Elect.

I want to take this opportunity now to apologise to both candidates, who put a tremendous amount of effort into their campaigns and to all members, particularly those who voted in what they believed to be a valid election. In this instance, we did not meet the high standards that our members expect of the CIPR.

At the close of nominations at noon on 24 September only one candidate had been nominated and they were informed that they stood unopposed. That evening, an appeal to consider a late nomination was submitted to me and then considered by the CIPR President. The late nomination was received and considered in good faith and flexibility on the deadline was allowed on this basis. The election then proceeded with two candidates.

In the week following the announcement of the election result, a complaint was made about the decision to allow the late nomination. In line with the CIPR's election regulations, a report was prepared for Council about the complaint. Council voted to take action based on the late nomination and a fresh election has been called. The basis of this decision was that there is no provision in the CIPR election regulations for the deadline for nominations to be appealed and that the decision to allow the late nomination invalidated the election.

This was a tough decision for Council to make and one which they knew could cause immediate reputational damage to the CIPR and the trust in its processes and procedures. In reaching this decision, I believe that the CIPR Council has put a requirement for transparency, an adherence to our Regulations and the long-term trust of our members as their first priority.

I am sorry for the reputational damage caused to the CIPR by our original decision. Council's action is the first step to rebuilding trust in our election process.</pp:quotetext>
