CIPR statement on Max Clifford verdict
The Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) has issued the following statement after the announcement that Max Clifford has been found guilty of eight indecent assaults.
"This has been a sad and shocking case with repercussions for many.
Whilst public relations has not been on trial here, we believe that as a champion of our members' professional interests and a body that works in the public interest, we should put on record that we believe that the actions of Mr Clifford should not be considered as damaging to, or associated with, our profession.
Mr Clifford has never signed himself up to industry recognised professional standards, nor is his line of work akin to anything that is undertaken by credible and accountable public relations professionals. There is also no evidence that he has ever engaged in what the CIPR and our members understand as modern public relations activity.
Public relations is a strategic management discipline focused on building reputation by promoting mutual understanding and we believe there has never been a more exciting time to work in our business."
