Overwhelming support for changes to CIPR governance

The Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) will be writing to the Privy Council Office seeking to amend its Charter and Bylaws following the Institute's Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) last night.

Members overwhelmingly voted in favour of the CIPR's proposed changes. There were three resolutions:

  • Special Resolution 1 - allowing an independent chair of the Board to be paid - passed with 342 votes (95.5%) in favour, 16 (4.5%) against and 21 abstentions.
  • Ordinary Resolution 2 – changing the composition of the Board to bring in greater external contributions and end Presidential co-options - passed with 338 votes (91.4%) in favour, 32 (9.6%) against and 9 abstentions.
  • Ordinary Resolution 3 – changing the composition of Council - passed with 336 votes (93.1%) in favour,25 (6.9%) against and 17 abstentions.

The Privy Council Office has indicated informally that they have no objection to the proposals, so an official agreement is expected without extended delay.

The CIPR's consultation, its first full governance review in 10 years, ran from 17 January until 29 February and received 244 comments. Other proposals within the consultation that do not require approval from the Privy Council Office will be agreed upon by the Board at their next meeting.

Alastair McCapra, CIPR Chief Executive

I would like to thank all the members who took the time to engage in this review during the consultation period and by voting. Good governance provides a compass to organisations and I firmly believe these changes direct the CIPR towards an increasingly strong and healthy position for the future. They provide the framework to meet our ambitions while providing members with greater representation and a healthy voice. We will be acting swiftly to make these changes and will continue to communicate their progress and will be keen to hear views on their impact.
